The Dangers of Store Bought Household Cleaning Products

“Did уоu know that many оf the hоuѕеhоld рrоduсtѕ bought at the grocery store meant tо kеер уоur home healthy might actually be doing just the opposite? When you see TV commercials with moms mopping their floors and cleaning their kitchen counters, there is no mention of the many toxic chemicals that those products might contain.”

Those words from an article by Alan Pariser is a good piece of homework for you.  Read the rest here →The Dangers of Store Bought Household Cleaning Productshousehold-products-advancingwithus

Choices Matter!”

So how do you know if the supplements you’re taking are actually making a difference?

“Many studies have looked at the effect of vitamin and mineral supplements on disease, but the evidence has never been convincing.  So most experts have hedged on whether to recommend multivitamins for everyone.”

https://hms.harvard.edu/…/Longwood_Sem…/Nutrition_3_5_13.pdf

“During the past 2 decades, a steady stream of high-quality studies evaluating dietary supplements has yielded predominantly disappointing results about potential health benefits, whereas evidence of harm has continued to accumulate.”

http://jamanetwork.com/journa…/jama/article-abstract/2565733

Comments from reports found on pages like these make people doubt the wisdom of spending money taking supplements. In 1997-2007, 14 thousand male physicians were tested finding no perceivable difference!

2013 brought a compilation of 198 studies showing no benefits and showing some harm more than good. However – 2014 and 2015, the prestigious Germany Freiburg University research associates and the Cincinnati Sterling Research Group documented major benefits beginning in one day (blood glucose, heart rate, blood pressure) and continuing to improve in those and other areas for many weeks with one supplement company. Inflammation and Free Radical protection are addressed in the combination.

Doing Your Flu Shot Homework

14479647_10154513827510350_1093210970610732581_n

This is a popular opinion!  What are your thoughts?

There are lots of dependable sources to support never getting a flu shot.  The decision was easy for me because my dad had Guillain-Barré seventeen years ago; one of the top four triggers for GB is the flu shot (which he had just before the onset of GB), and he and I are very similar physically.  So – yes, easy decision for me.

But if you are doing your homework on the subject, here are some of my favorite trustworthy voices:

The Surprising Health Benefits of Coffee

The Surprising Benefits of Coffee
The Surprising Benefits of Coffee

In an article by Ty Bollinger from Truth About Cancer you will learn:

  • Coffee is one of the most popular drinks on the planet. While often used as a stimulate to wake people up (or keep them awake), there are actually health benefits to coffee.
  • A 2008 study led by the Harvard School of Public Health determined that men and women who drank as much as six cups a day did not increase their risk of disease or early death. Prior data that “coffee is bad for you” did not take into account the unrelated bad habits of participants such as smoking, physical inactivity, or overall poor diet.
  • Coffee has been shown to improve heart health (due to fewer calcium deposits), decrease the risk for MS and Parkinson’s disease, and improve brain health. It has even been shown to play a role in fighting type 2 diabetes.
  • The benefits of coffee depend on where the beans are grown and harvested as well as how it is prepared. Most coffee beans are sprayed heavily with pesticides. So you should select only coffee beans that are certified organic.
  • The benefits for caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee is almost the same. But make sure you are drinking real coffee, not the coffee “concoctions” filled with health-harming sugars, fats, and artificial flavors. Stick to around 2 cups per day.

Is Tea Good for You?

While coffee remains the most popular hot drink in North America, this article suggests 10 reasons why tea should be considered more often by many of us. The hydration and antioxidant qualities of tea can help prevent heart disease and stroke, guard against cancer and even give you a brighter smile.

So the next time you reach for that cup maybe you should consider filling it with tea instead. It may even help you lose some weight, since it is calorie free and it jacks up your metabolic rate.

I use a great tasting line of healthy herbal teas that began my journey of liking tea  – and now there are so many interesting choices. Share with me what ones you look forward to sipping.

Choices Matter in your Spring Cleaning!

Number 10 on Dr. Mercola’s list of Top 12 Cancer Prevention Strategies (found here) is:

Exposure to Toxins: Reduce your exposure to environmental toxins like pesticides, herbicides, household chemical cleaners, synthetic air fresheners and toxic cosmetics.

Seems to me that we are not waking up to the need to choose healthier cleaning products even though there are messages all around us that we should be doing so from all degrees of healthy thinking – even the big government sites have joined the crusade. Healthy minded people that have been told still have all sorts of toxic cleaning products sitting around their homes.

Twenty three years ago, I began shopping with a manufacturing company that was emphasizing safer products.  I loved them, but in trying to decide if this was information I should share, I spent hours researching the need.  Here are some of the things I found necessary to begin sharing with that many years ago:

  • The American Lung Association says to not use hazardous household products, if at all possible…use nontoxic alternatives instead.
  • Did you know that housewives have a 55% higher risk of getting cancer than women working outside the home because of ordinary household cleaners?
  • Commonly, the word “poison” means ingesting a toxic substance, but the body can be poisoned in many other ways.  You breathe fumes  – they are absorbed into your body.  You get chemicals on your hands or skin – you absorb them.  A toxic chemical can be absorbed by ingesting it, touching it, or even touching a surface where it was applied days or even weeks before.
  • Did you know that the leading cause of poisoning children under six is LIQUID DISH SOAP according to the poison control center, and there have been children die from just tasting liquid gel dishwasher detergent?
  • What are hazardous household products?  The American Lung Association includes:

air fresheners, disinfectants, mother repellents, tub/tile cleaners, aerosol spray products including health, beauty and cleaning products, shoe polish, laundry products, chlorine bleach, stain removers, dry cleaning fluids, oven cleaners, furniture and floor polish, rug and upholstery cleaners.

  • And what are the health effects?

irritation and burning of the skin, eyes and nose or throat – headaches and nausea – respiratory problems – muscle weakness, liver and kidney damage – shortness of breath – skin rashes – depression – fatigue – confusion – cancer and death

That is all still current healthy thinking!  During all that research, I read many sad, sad stories involving household cleaners.  Some children’s hospitals have entire floors with accidental cleaning product poisoning cases. I’ve met people that have been damaged by normal use of some of these products still on store shelves today. One lady had to have her car totaled months after a cleaning spill.  Pets have been accidentally killed. And the rate of asthma and eczema keeps soaring.

How healthy is your home?  This video will give you a hint: Toxic Brew – CBC Marketplace Report

Before learning about my favorite healthy store – a solution was not convenient in my eyes.  My choices were health food store products – which generally were expensive and poor performers or MLM company products which often are expensive and poor performers. Oh, and another choice was mixing home recipes (which is still the preferred choice for many), but that was overwhelming for this mother of three home school children – especially since the recipes have to be mixed fresh and their performance is only “sufficient.”  If that is your choice, you might want to check Spring Cleaning, the Non-Toxic Way – another Mercola.com site complete with recipes.

Thankfully, we live in a new day!  Shopping for safer products can be money saving, time saving and with great performing products; there are companies that are making it easy to have a safer home and do our part in taking care of this gift called earth at the same time.  I finally learned that twenty three years ago.  And I learned that…

A Healthy Choice: Cut sugar consumption!

From an article at mercola.com entitled The Link Between Obesity and Cancer  these main topics to encourage cutting back on sugar are discussed:

  • Processed Food Drives Obesity and Cancer Epidemics
  • Studies Showing Obesity-Cancer Link
  • Your Body Has Limited Ability to Process Sugar
  • Understanding the Sugar-Cancer Connection

So how do we cut back?  Dr.Mercola gives an exellent, doable list:

  1. Avoid processed sugar/fructose, grains, and processed foods
  2. Eat a healthful diet of whole foods, ideally organic, and replace the grain carbs with:
    • Large amounts of vegetables
    • Low-to-moderate amount of high-quality protein (think organically raised, pastured animals)
    • As much high-quality healthful fat as you want (saturated and monounsaturated from animal and tropical oil sources). Most people actually need upwards of 50-85 percent fats in their diet for optimal health—a far cry from the 10 percent currently recommended.

Other ways to cut down on your sugar consumption include:

  • Cutting back on the amount of sugar you personally add to your food and drink
  • Using Stevia or Luo Han instead of sugar and/or artificial sweeteners. You can learn more about the best and worst of sugar substitutes in my previous article, “Sugar Substitutes—What’s Safe and What’s Not
  • Using fresh fruit in lieu of canned fruit or sugar for meals or recipes calling for a bit of sweetness
  • Using spices instead of sugar to add flavor to your meal

And a final piece of advice from the doctor:

“Remember, exercise will not compensate for a diet too high in sugar, and such a diet will destroy many of the benefits of exercise too boot. So you really need to address what and when you eat if you want to shed excess weight and lower your risk for cancer and other chronic disease. There’s no magic bullet, but a healthy lifestyle may be as close as you’ll ever get to one.”

Sinus challenges! Part Two

In Sinus challenges! (Part One) – I left you without saying what really changed my runny nose.  The things I did mention (more antioxidant, enough sleep, no sugar and white flour), I think were instrumental in my not dealing with any pollen allergies this Spring, but there are two more really important additions I wanted to share.

Since I did not have a comment box at the time of part one, most people responded to my asking about what was helping them combat allergies over on my Facebook page.  Let me share those with you as I received them: Zyrtec and other pills each morning, Neti Pot and Zyrtec, Melaleuca Activate, Mucinex, Melaleuca Provex Plus (that is the antioxidant I added), Benadryl and a decongestant, Melaleuca Oil under the nose at bedtime and couple times the day, and Flonase.  I love having people share remedies – so if you read this and have others, please post below.

My helpful additions: There was some talk that because I was in Costa Rica, when the dreadful pollen onslaught happened, that my body did not have a chance to build up a immunity to the pollen. That makes sense to me – it’s the idea behind vaccinations, right?  That got me to thinking – sure I was in Costa Rica that month, however, due to foot surgery the August before and then cooler weather, I had not walked in Memphis Metro pollen for over nine months!  If your body does need to get gradual exposure, well mine had none!  So I began walking outside again last June.  I wonder how many allergy sufferers are not outside on a regular basis except to go to and from work and errands?  I had more foot surgery this March, but I sat outside for a bit each day – pollen exposure and vitamin D.  I just sense that this is important.

And the runny nostril – that the ENT and Dermatologist had no clue about?

Enter: nasal rinse.

Doesn’t it make sense that washing that pollen, dust, dirt, fungus, etc. out of the nostrils each day would be a great step to mellowing sinus problems?  If you can picture me having to plug my right nostril with tissue (ear plug did not work – yes, grin) in order to cook, do laundry, etc. – you will know how desperate I was.  That runny nostril went from 95% distraction and stress to less than 25% the first few days of nasal rinsing.

Not being a drug person, I was looking for some more natural solutions, and it starts with building your immune system.  So right now, My Sinus Help List looks like this:

  • Eat healthier: more fresh foods, almost no white flour or sugar.
  • Get enough sleep.
  • Exercise and make part of that outside so your body can build its resistance to the yuk that aggravates your sinuses.
  • Take a quality multi-mineral/vitamin supplement (they are not easy to find, don’t even look on a store shelf)  Get your vitamin D from a little sun each day – can you take your work break outside?
  • Add an antioxidant – grapeseed/grapeskin extract (like Melaleuca’s Provex Plus mentioned above) is a powerful help for allergies and a bunch of other things we are trying to prevent
  • Water!  I put lemon essential oil in mine – more antioxidants and cleansing.
  • Daily nasal rinse, especially during the spring and fall seasons.  I have not used a Neti Pot, but this bottle works great – warm, clean water, gentle squeeze – no discomfort:

Sinus Rinse

I also add (this is self doctoring) a drop of Melaleuca Oil for its germ/bacteria/anti-fungal killing properties. This essential oil comment reminds me that their are more helpful options that I am confident people should consider:

  •  Many people testify that quality essential oils like Lavender are their solution for sinus trouble.  Here is a trustworthy site: www.oilygurus.com – look under Ailments.
  •  And read what these people have done in RmBarry’s Wellness Guide Tips Newsletter on the subject here.
